A collection of pictures of Jersey in 1890
Photographs and pictures of Jersey in 1890 abound, although in many cases those on sale today are more likely to have been taken or published in the last decade of the 19th century, rather in 1890 itself.
There is a set of Chromo prints, individual pictures from which are widely available for sale. They were published by Nelson, probably in the early 20th century, but the original paintings of the views of Jersey are said to date from 1890, or shortly after. Knowledgeable postcard collectors may be able to throw more light on this series and add information to this page.
It is possible that the pictures were also published in a book, and some of those available for purchase have no postcard markings on the reverse. A word of warning, however, to those seeking to buy specimens - there are known to be many modern reproductions masquerading as originals.
Postcards of Jersey only began to appear in any quantity in the first few years of the 20th century, but the earliest known to exist was posted on 15 July 1895.
All the pictures in the gallery below are believed to date from 1890 to 1899. What makes pictures of this era particularly important is that they show the locations, largely on the island's coastline, much as they had been for centuries before. It was only the 20th century which brought development of coastal bays and clifftops, a process which continues to this day.
