Origins of surname

The surname is of French origin, and is a diminuitive of Ami, meaning 'friend'.

Early records

It has now been definitely established that Pierre Amiot, who married Virginie Fontaine, in 1860, was born in Jersey in 1840, in Grouville. Virginie was born in France in 1838. It is likely that Pierre's father Bienaime came to Jersey from France.
