Origins of surname
The surname is of French origin, and is a diminuitive of Ami, meaning 'friend'.
It is suggested by some researchers that Pierre Amiot, who married Virginie Fontaine, in about 1860, was born in Jersey in 1840, but there is no record of his birth or baptism in the island. The 1871 census does show him as born in Grouville. Virginie was born in France in 1838.
