Origins of surname
This surname is a diminuitive of Barnard or Bernard, which in turn derives from the Germanic personal name Bernhard, made up of bern = 'bear' and hard = 'brave, strong or hardy'.
The name first appears in Jersey church records from 1766 onwards, with the baptism of the children of Jean Barney and Susanne Le Gros at St Mary. They had nine children.
