Origins of surname
In old English beorc meant 'birch' and leah meant wood, so the original Bartley either lived in a birch wood or came from Bartley Regis in Hampshire, or Bartley Green in Worcestershire, which have the same derivation.
The baptism of Harriet Bartley, daughter of Robert and Betsey Benest in St Helier in 1823 is the earliest on record in Jersey.
