Origins of surname
This surname is most likely to have originated in the medieval personal name Bate, a contraction of Bartholomew. It is also thought possible that it could be associated with the old English name for a boatman.
The name first appears in Jersey church records from 1806 with the baptism of the children of Henry Bates and Ann.
