There are some who say that Bellot is simply a variant of Billot, a much more common Jersey surname, but our best French sources do not agree, and neither do we

Origins of surname

Bellot is derived from Bel = 'beautiful' and comes from various places further afield in France than Billot, which has its origins in Normandy.

Early records

Bellot is not found in Jersey records until 1715, whereas Billot was present as early as the 14th century. In 1715 Pierre Bellot (or Belau) and Marie Anne Reau, both refugees from France, were married in St Martin
