Origins of surname

This is probably a variant of Bowhay, although we have not found it listed by any of our usual sources for surname origins. That, in turn, is a variant of Bowie, originally a nickname for someone with fair or golden hair, derived from the Gaelic buidhe.

Early records

The name first appeared in Jersey records in the 1850s, with the baptisms of children of John and Harriet and James and Ellen.

Variations

  • Bewhay
  • Bowhay
