Origins of surname

The original Bishop was not a church official but probably the head of a community, or overseer, from epi=over and skopein='look'. The name may also have been used for someone who worked in a Bishop's house.

Early records

The name has been present since 1654, when Jeanne, the daughter of English soldier Gilles and an unknown mother was baptised in St Ouen. He was the first of a substantial number of English soldier Bishops to marry in Jersey.
