Origins of surname

This is a French surname which essentially translates as 'little white one', and is one of a number of French surnames with blanc at its origin, not necessarily variants of each other.

Early records

Blanchet baptisms are recorded from 1573 to 1701, but then the family seems to have died out in Jersey. It is shown as a current surname in our Comprehensive list of Jersey surnames, which suggests that the author was unaware of the earlier records and assumed that the reappearance of the surname in St Ouen and St Lawrence in the 1890s was its first presence in Jersey.

One of the family trees below starts in the Brittany commune of Ploeuc-sur-Lie, from where many of today's Jersey families originate

  • Blanchet
  • Blanchard, not seen as a variant but a separate family in Jersey.
