Origins of surname
This was probably an occupational name for a 'bridelsmyth', a maker of bits and bridles for horses and one who worked in both leather and metal.
The surname first appeared in Jersey records in the 1840s and the family can be traced through to the 20th century, and probably up to the 21st.
