Origins of surname

The name orginates with the old English burh, or Anglo-Saxon burg, both meaning a fortress on a hill. It has been particularly popular in Ireland, where the family is held in great esteem.

Early records

The name was first brought to Jersey in the early 19th century, and five different families appear to have become established by 1825. Descendants emigrated to New Zealand
