Origins of surname

This surname is derived from the old English burh = 'fort' and hrycg = 'ridge'. There are three places with this name in Devon, where the family could have its origins. The surname may also have developed from the old personal name 'Burrich', with a similar derivation

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptisms of Augustus William and John Barres, possibly twin sons of John and Ann Burridge, in St Helier in 1827
