Origins of surname
This is a common name in Normandy and is derived from the old French quaré, meaning square or well-built. There is also a possibility that the name relates to a word used in parts of Normandy for a vegetable bed, and could have been used to identify a gardener, but this meaning is not thought very likely by experts in the derivation of French names.
The name first appears in church records in St Brelade in the first decade of the 17th century. There are unconnected baptisms in St Clement from 1629 to 1645, and more in St Helier from 1779 to 1784.
It appears that all these early families, which failed to catch the attention of the compiler of our comprehensive list of Jersey surnames, died out, and the name made a reappearance in the early 19th century. At least two families came to Jersey from Sark, where the name has remained common, as it also is today in Jersey.
- Le Carre
- Carret, a French variation
