Origins of surname

This was either an occupational name for a carver of wood, from the old English ceorfan, meaning to cut or carve; or it is derived from the Norman French caruier, meaning a ploughman

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the burial of James Carver in St Helier in 1794. He is not believed to have been an ancestor of later Carvers in the island.

James Carver, son of Morris, married widow Maria Burrell, nee Thomas, in St Helier in 1852 and the first of their three children was baptised in the parish the following year. Their second and third sons, Henry James and Thomas George, both had large families
