This is an unusual surname, in that it is derived from a female personal name, Catherine, thought ultimately to derive from the Old Greek word katharos, meanng pure and clean

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Edmond, son of Nicollas and Judith Richardson in St Martin in 1631
