Origins of surname

This 12th century English name comes from the old English ceorl meaning a 'peasant' or 'serf' and tun a 'farm' or 'settlement'. Ceorlatun" meant 'settlement of the peasants', and there are several English placenames with this derivation

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Clement Charlton, son of Nicollas, in St Saviour in 1576. A family appears to have become established in the parish over the next century, but then either it died out or there was a gap in records, until Charlton families reappeared in the late 18th century
