Origin of Surname

This is a name of medieval French origin, derived from the Norman French castel, meaning a castle or residence of a feudal lord. The name could originally have referred to a resident of a castle or a servant who lived and worked there.

Early records

The first Chatel to arrive in Jersey was possibly Charles, born about 1816 in Granville, Normandy (see tree below). As can be seen in the tree, the family moved from Jersey to Alderney, and then returned. There were five Chatel households in Jersey in 2012.
