Origin of Surname
This family name, which is found mainly in the parish name of St Clement, is derived from a baptismal name meaning "good", "sweet" and "peaceful".
Probably the earliest record of the name in Jersey is in 1485, but genealogists believe that the family had already then been established in the island for several generations. Whether the family originated outside the island or, as historian the Rev J A Messervy believed, started within the island, is unknown.
