Origins of surname
Cock has long been an affectionate nickname for a boy, and may have developed into a surname. Alternatively the name may come from the word for a male bird and suggest a man who strutted proudly like a cock.
The surname is found from 1789 in St Helier baptism records. Ten children of William Cock and Jeanne Le Gros Bisson were baptised in the parish between then and 1803.
