Origins of surname

This surname, which appears to come mainly from the West Country, is a variant of Crowd. It is not related to the word for a large gathering of people, but is of early medieval English origin, derived from crouth or croude, meaning 'crowd', in this case a popular medieval bowed stringed instrument. It was originally given as an occupational name to someone who played the instrument, and was first recorded in the late 13th Century

Early records

The name is well known to many family historians researching their ancestry in Jersey because in the 19th century a family undertaking business was established by William J Croad, and the records of this business held by Jersey archive provide valuable information about death in the island over an extended period.

There appear to have been at least two Croad families established separately in Jersey during the 19th century. The personal name William is common to both and there must be a suspicion that they were related before they arrived in the island.
