Origins of surname

There are a number of places in the north of England called Dalton, which is derived from the old English doel for a valley, and tun for a farm or settlement. So the original Daltons probably lived in a valley.

Early records

The name did not appear in Jersey records until late in the 18th century, and the original settler is believed to have come from Ireland.
