Origins of surname

This name is still present in Jersey today and is clearly French in origin, but we have found no information about its origins. It may be linked to the Manoir de Guelle at Cerences in Normandy,

Alternatively it is possible that it is a variant of Degueldre, a surname found in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, also spelt Degueldaire, Deguelder, Degelder, Degeldere. This would suggest someone from the province of Guelder in the Netherlands, or possibly a silversmith or coin maker, from the Dutch geld = money.

Early records

The first baptisms registered in Jersey were those of Francis (1839- ) and Jean Baptiste (1841- ), the sons of Jean Baptiste and Marie Delphine Lamare. They both came from France and were married in Jersey in 1839. It is believed that the family originated in the Indre et Loir department.

Variants

  • de Guelle
  • Deguelle
