Denonciateur

An executive officer of the Royal Court of Jersey, appointed by the Bailiff, and subordinate to the Viscount, but with a considerably different role from today's holder of that office. He served processes and carried the mace before the Bailiff. In earlier days he proclaimed new laws at the Market Cross. In the early 18th century the Dénonciateur had the task of posting, in the Royal Square, an Order in Council regarding currency devaluation, and was in fear for his own safety in the riot that immediately broke out.

From 1643 there were two Denunciators. The office was abolished in 1930. Most of the Denunciator's duties were then performed by an officer known as the Sergent de Justice.

The origins of this office are uncertain. 12th Century documents refer to Le Bedeau (comparable to the English beadle of that era), a subordinate officer of Justice. In Les Rôles des Justiciers itinérants of 1323 the Dénonciateur has the Latin title 'sub-vicecommes' - Député-Vicomte. Dénonciateurs had a role early in the church affairs of the Island similar to that of Beadles in England at the time, with powers to inform on, and give small punishments to petty offenders. In the 16th century the role became a part of the Royal Court and a Dénonciateur would, under the Viscount charge petty offenders in civil matters. Dénonciateurs were nominated by the Bailiff and would appear before the Royal Court as 'expert' witness and an accuser.
