Le Gros family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Latterly of St Helier, where he was buried
  2. Although the Armorial of Jersey, 216, stated "Dumaresq", this surname appears to be distinct from the old Jersey name Dumaresq. Elie and Marie`s eldest child had as godparents Timothée Maresq and Marie, his wife. This was no mere spelling variation, as Timothée was buried in St Helier as "Maresq" (1658). The Maresqs were probably Huguenots, this being Old French for "Marsh"--a common enough name in most North European countries. The Armorial is doubtless correct in stating that it was this Elie Le Gros who settled in St Helier
  3. Buried as Marguerite Guillemette, femme d'Elie Le Gros (1709, St H). The full surname of this family may have been Mollet dit Guillemette, as Jean Mollet [..]t Guillemette m (1644, Tr) Sara Fiquet. [indicating torn register and loss of two or three letters]. In spite of patchy coverage at this date in Trinity of baptisms, marriages and burials, the twins Jeanne and Sara Guillemette, daughters of (perhaps the same) Jean Guillemette were baptised in Trinity in 1652. In 1669, at St Helier, a Philippe Guillemette ( -1694) married another Marie Maresq, perhaps a niece of Elie Le Gros' wife. The godparents of their first child, Marie, in 1672, indicate that Philippe was, in all likelihood, a son of Abraham Guillemette of Trinity, who married there in 1621, Jeanne du Feu
  4. Married as Jean fils Elie Le Gros de St Helier et Susanne fille Josué Langlois de La Trinité
  5. Her godparents were Elie Le Gros, grand-père et Marie Langlois
  6. Christened as "Le fils de Jean Le Gros", that his name was actually Elie Jean is based on subsequent godparent evidence and will be confirmed or otherwise by the Land Registry and Court records in the coming months
  7. Susanne`s grandmother was Elizabeth Mollet, who may have been a relative of the Guillemettes, above
  8. Buried "aged 85", (25/2/1826, St S), but died in St Helier, widow of Luc Le Sauteur. Godparents of the couple`s children included Jean Le Gros, uncle, and Jeanne Le Gros, aunt (1771), and Amice Le Vavasseur dit Durell, who was a 1st cousin
  9. Christened as the daughter of "Elie Jean Le Gros junior" and Susanne Le Vavasseur dit Durell. It seems that Jean Le Gros (1673- ) may have also used the name Elie Jean. This is subject to confirmation
  10. Baptised as above, son of Elie Jean Le Gros junior
  11. Charles` godparents were his father and "Mse Esther Le Feuvre, femme de Me Michel Le Gros, tante"
  12. Builder and property owner. His godparents were Michel Le Breton of Trinity, after whom he was evidently named, and Susanne Le Gros, his wife, thus providing the first of two godparent connections linking his family with that of Jean Le Gros and Susanne Langlois, his wife, above. An assignation of rente (income) at the Jersey Archive, dated 8th August 1807, records that Michel Le Gros was the "son of Elie Jean Le Gros", as above: L/C/47/A/625
  13. Of Seafield, Millbrook (1821)
  14. MA (Cantab), of Seafield; Seigneur de Mélèches; Advocate (1853), Greffier (1861), Vicomte (1876) and Jurat (1894)
  15. Merchant and Jurat
  16. Colonel, Royal Artillery
  17. Executrix of her late father's Will, dated 1911, with probate granted 25/11/1921. She died shortly afterwards, with her nephew, F.G. Le Gros, and Alexander M. Coutanche being appointed co-executors
  18. OV; MA (Cantab), Barrister-at-Law, Advocate. Of Goodlands Cottage, Bagatelle Road, St Saviour
  19. OV, MA (Cantab) Seigneur de Mélches; Major, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died whilst serving in Hong Kong--Memorial Inscription, St Saviour
  20. She married secondly, in 1950, Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Edmund Mark Le Gallais, of Mont Fiquet House, La Moye
  21. Seigneur de Mélèches; Property Owner
  22. They had issue, including the present Seigneur de Mélèches
  23. Of La Profonde Rue, Trinity, Artist. He died without issue
  24. Captain, Lincolnshire Regiment (regular Army). He also served, as did his brother, in WW1
  25. John Bertram Le Gros had issue a son and daughter
  26. Settled in St Mary
  27. He and his wife, of St Mary, were in 1741 godparents of Michel, son of Michel Le Breton and Susanne Le Gros, his wife. This is a second godparent connection through the Trinity Le Bretons to the family of Michel Le Gros, son of Elie Jean, above
