Descendants of Gilbert Lempriere

This genealogy of the holders of the Fief de Lempriere, featured in generations 1-9, is based upon undeniable historical succession, as shown. It will, therefore, understandably conflict with Descendants of Everard de Lempriere (970), for which there is, in the early generations, little basis of fact. Dates of birth are estimated.

Dates of birth/baptism, from the mid-16th century, will be added, in due course

Lempriere family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Gilbert Lempriere (Imperator) owed the Crown in 1180, 60 sous, being part of a balance of old fines in the Ministerium de Groceio, (de Grouchy), which ministerium covered the four central Jersey parishes of St Helier, St Lawrence, St John and Trinity. This is of importance, as the Fief de Lempriere is in St Helier, within that ministerium. GFB de Gruchy wrote, in Medieval Land Tenures in Jersey, (Jersey: Bigwoods, 1957), 71, "seeing that full relief [60 sous] was due on this fief in 1274 and that fines and reliefs are lumped together elsewhere in the Great Rolls of the Exchequer, it is highly probable that this was the relief then overdue on the fief." Gilbert Lempriere`s date of birth has been estimated upon the likelihood of inheriting in one`s middle age
  2. Willielmus dictus Imperator, Seigneur in 1274 of the Fief Willielmi Imperatoris, which was, no doubt, the Fief de Lempriere, as it was in St Helier and he owed the full relief of 60 sous and 40 sous "rente" [greverie]; Jurat.
  3. Seigneur of the Fief de Lempriere in 1309 Assize, owing the full relief and rente, as above.
  4. Seigneur of the Fief de Lempriere in 1331 Extente. However, de Gruchy notes, op.cit., the fief had by 1331 been reduced from one carucate [60 acres] to 30 acres, and therefore paid half the relief, 30 sous. The fief was still held, though, by suit of court and payment of the full greverie of 40 sous.
  5. Seigneur by 1342 of the divided Fief de Lempriere; Jurat by that date until c.1380; Purchasor in 1367 from Philippe de Barentin of the Fief de Rosel and Baillif of Jersey, 1362
  6. Or Guillaume, Bailiff, 1332
  7. Jurat, 1381-1409; Seigneur of Rosel and of the divided Fief de Lempriere, which his family "parted the later Middle Ages": de Gruchy, op. cit., 72
  8. Seigneur of Rosel; Jurat, 1442-1467; killed at the Seige of Mont Orgueil Castle, Christmas Eve, 1467
  9. Genealogy of Camel and de Plecy of Shapwyk, Dorset: ABSJ, X, 114
  10. Jurat; Governor of Jersey, (1500- )
