He gained his 2nd Mate`s (Steamship) Certificate, 5/5/1923; 1st Mate`s Certificate, 26/11/1924 and then acquired, shortly after 1927, his Master`s Certificate [UK Masters and Mates, 1850-1927, at www.ancestry.co.uk]. 34. Went to Baltimore, USA
  35. In the St Helier Census, 1911, the widower Alfred de Gruchy mentions four children born of his late marriage, all of whom were still living. It is therefore hard to see how "David de Gruchy", a fifth child, fits in, who is remembered in family tradition as having `jumped ship` in the U.S.A., of whom nothing was ever again heard. Perhaps this was Alfred junior and the name mistaken? Alfred senior is remembered as having been latterly blind. This may well have been work-related
