Frederick Matthew de Ste Croix (1875-1953)

This tree features the first three generations of two branches of the family that were previously displayed mistakenly under Descendants of Simeon de Ste Croix. One of these included the family of Charles de Ste Croix, who married in 1717 Elizabeth Le Gallais. The baptisms of children born to this marriage show him to have been "fils Moyse" and not "fils Jean" as shown on the former tree. These are now correctly featured on this page

de Ste Croix family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. There are two possible St Helier baptisms for Moyse. The first is in 1658, son of Thomas. The second is in 1663, son of Guillaume and Susanne Le Vavasseur dit Noel. The latter is of more likely date. However, the name Guillaume was seldom re-used, and there were other individuals named Moyse de St Croix, even if their baptisms are not immediately evident. Moyse was buried as "Moyse senior," two years before his son
  2. Brother of Pierre de Ste Croix, who was described as "Oncle" and godfather of Jeanne de Ste Croix in 1736. Charles de Ste Croix was still living in 1767, when he became a godfather to his grand-daughter, Elizabeth Redman
  3. Described on christening, as were her sisters Elizabeth and Jeanne, as "fille Charles, fils Moyse, et Elizabeth Le Gallais"
  4. Their son, Charles Elie Gibaut, had as godparents in 1762, Me Charles de Ste Croix and Elizabeth Le Gallais, his wife
  5. Philippe`s Will, dated 1776 and proved in 1778, mentions his dear wife, Anne Voisin, executrix and residual legatee, and his "two sisters, Susanne de Ste Croix and Jeanne, wife of Louis Redman." The said "Louis" may have been a clerical error or nickname. He was in fact Jean Redman. The testator`s sister Elizabeth must have predeceased him: D/Y/A/12/104, at the Jersey Archive
  6. No issue
  7. Godparents: Mons. Matthieu Le Gallais and Esther Le Gallais, Grandmother, above
  8. Godparents: Mons. Amice Marett and Dlle Marguerite Le Gallais
  9. "Fille Mr Charles de St Croix junr. and Mse Elizabeth Payn, his wife"
  10. Susanne`s godparents were, interestingly: Me Charles de Ste Croix fils Noe, and Susanne Laurens, his wife
  11. Godparents: Pierre de Ste Croix, Uncle, and Jeanne de Ste Croix, widow of Me Thomas Bouton
  12. Issue: Elizabeth, 1767 (Me Charles de Ste Croix, Grandfather, as godfather); Jeanne, 1769; Jean, 1770 (Me Philippe de Ste Croix, fils Charles, and Mse Anne Le Cras, godparents); Philippe,1773 (Me Philippe de Ste Croix and Mse Elizabeth de Ste Croix, wife of Me Edouard Gibaut, godparents); Jeanne, 1776
  13. Christened as "-----, fils Moyse de Ste Croix et Esther Le Gallais." The 1734 christening of Pierre de Ste Croix, Moyse`s son, describes the child as "fils Moyse, fils Moyse"
  14. Pierre "fils Moyse de Ste Croix, fils Moyse, et de Marie Bechervaise, sa femme" in 1734. His godfather was his uncle, Pierre de Ste Croix fils Moyse
  15. Godfather, her uncle, Mathieu de Ste Croix, fils Moyse
