Descendants of Noel De Ste Croix

We have taken the decision to include this submitted tree, which was copied from an online tree, and sent to us by a Jerripedia user for our comments. We can have no confidence in its accuracy - there are no sources - and many obvious errors - but it is a valuable illustration of how suspicions should be aroused in those encountering such long trees during their research.

We are highly suspicious of many elements, not least the birth of the first children in generation 4 when their mother was 14, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, and before the date given for her marriage. The fact that the children were supposedly baptised in a variety of parishes is also unusual. The problems continue in generation 5 with the first child being baptised when the mother is 15, and five being baptised before the marriage.

Of course couples have often been married after the birth of one or more of their children, but rarely, if ever, after the birth of several children in 16th and 17th century Jersey. The suggestion that the mother had 23 children over a period of 28 years also rings alarm bells. It should be noted that only six of them appear in baptism registers.

Generation 6 is no better. The first child is baptised three years before the mother's marriage at the age of 36 and the last when she is 64. Highly unlikely!

We have included further notes throughout the tree to indicate material of which we are suspicious.

As can be seen in generation 6, the whole top end of the tree falls apart because the Mathieu on whom the descent stands or falls was not the son of Mathieu in gen 5.

Please see our new tree Descendants of Mathieu de Ste Croix and Marie Durel for a descendancy fully supported by church records. A further tree, Descendants of Pierre de Ste Croix - 3 which probably links downwards from Descendants of Mathieu de Ste Croix and Marie Durel, was added in July 2017, and has been fully checked against church records. It supports some elements of the original tree on this page, and confirms that others are inaccurate.

As a final comment at the end of a messy and thoroughly badly researched tree, which should never be shown on a public forum without qualification, we can only say that it is regrettably typical of many online attempts to create extensive trees with early generations predating parish registers. When you think you have suddenly found several extra generations for your own tree online, check each relationship very carefully. If just one generation does not stand up to scrutiny, you should reject the whole tree.

This is why Jerripedia now carries out extensive checks on every submitted tree before it is posted. We are also working back through trees posted on the site prior to the online availability of church records in 2012 and are finding it necessary to make many changes, or add qualifying notes to the trees.
