Descendants of Perrin Anley

This tree features the Anley family of Les Aix, in the Vingtaine of Coin Varin, St Peter. Generation four, and four entries from generation 5, were begun in 2011. Further details were added in 2018. Since then, the genealogy follows the work, in the early 1900s, of Charles Langton. The latter added to his own Anley research, the notes of the Jersey genealogist, the Rev J A Messervy

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  3. Nicolas Anley was, in a court case, dated 1552 described as "fils Jean, fils Perrin". In 1563, he was the principal heir of Sire Nicolas Anley, priest

  10. Heir of his brother, 1636. His initials "PAL" and the date 1677 are engraved on a fireplace at Les Aix
  11. Constable of St Peter, 1694 and 1697-1708. His initials are engraved at Les Aix: PAL 1718, as are his and his wife`s initials: PAL SLM 1689. The latter stone suggests that Philippe had inherited by then. A Le Maistre Will (apparently lost in indexing) describes him as "Mons. Philippe Anley, Marchand, de Jersey". His own Will, dated 28th June 1728 and proved in 1729, requests that "if his son Edouard [Anley] returns "ce que je ne croys pas" that he be given his share of the inheritance. As the testator`s daughter Alice was his eventual heiress, Edouard evidently never returned: D/Y/A/6/28, at the Jersey Archive

  13. Constable of St Peter, 1727-1740; Jurat, 1740-1754. He was the last of the male line at Les Aix. 14. Seigneur d`Orville and of the Fief du Prieur à St Pierre, Advocate, Constable, Jurat and Lieutenant-Bailiff
  15. Lived (translated) "near the Temple (sic) of St Peter": His house so situated was mentioned in 1601. Note: He was described then as "Jean Anley junior, fils Richard". It was not uncommon in Jersey prior to 1700 to give two children the same name. This is believed to have arisen from a much-loved older child being near to death at the time of baptism of the next child of the same sex, the aim of which was to perpetuate the name of the likely deceased. When the latter revived, the two children were distinguished in legal documents as, for example, "Jean Anley senior, fils Richard" and "Jean Anley junior, fils Richard"
  16. Settled in St Helier
  17. Richard Anley`s Will, dated 15/08/1668, mentions his nephew, Philippe Anley, to whom he left a Bible, his brother Thomas Anley and nephew Thomas Le Gros
  18. The Alumni Oxoniensis has this entry for Philippe Anley: "Anley, Philip, s. Philip, of St Saviour, Jersey p[ensioner] Merton Coll.; matr[iculated] December 1666 ae 16; B.A. from Gloucester Hall 9/3/1672/3; M.A. 1675". The Jersey Land Registry mentions that he was the Reverend Philippe Anley
  19. This Richard Anley was most likely the ancestor of the Anleys in the near-by parish of St John. Noticeably, the Christian names Thomas, Jean and Pierre recur in both families
  20. Settled in St Lawrence. He was still living in 1655
  21. Seigneur of the Franc Fief (St B)
  22. Procureur du Bien Public (St P). "Guillaume Anley fils Jacques" was also a co-heir of Sire Nicolas Anley, priest, 1586
