de Ste Croix family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Founder of auctioneer and estate agent business at 9 Library Place. Also Auctioneer, living at 9, Library Place, St Helier, between 1841 and 1871: St Helier Censuses. Living with him at 9, Library Place, in 1851, was Susan de Ste Croix, a Schoolmistress, being his 19 year old daughter, his sons Philip junr. and Charles and his brother George, a Cabinet Maker. In 1871, he had the company, at the same address, of his son Charles, now a Wine Merchant, and of his grand-daughter, Lilian de Jersey Rolls, aged 12 years, who had been born in America, which may have influenced the choice of her middle name. Philip senr`s Will was dated and proved in 1876. He left to his eldest son Philippe, his Library Place shop, with contents; mentions his brother George; daughter Susan Jane, then wife of Mons. Pierre Francois Duguey and the following grandchildren: Lilian Rolls, Philip John de Ste Croix, Charles de Ste Croix, Walter de Ste Croix and Susan, then still unmarried: D/Y/A/39/18, at the Jersey Archive
  2. Formerly a Schoolmistress
  3. Varnish Manufacturer
  4. Independant
  5. Auctioneer. He ran the estate agency section of auctioneer and estate agent business. He lived at 11, Library Place, St Helier. In 1861, he was a House Agent--being the original name for an Estate Agent-- and also a "Dealer in China and Glassware." With him, was his newly-married wife, Susaana. In 1871, he was a Wine Merchant, at the same address, presumably working with his brother, Charles. With him was Susanna, his wife, and children Philip John, Charles, Walter and Susannah. On his father`s death in 1876, he reverted to the family occupation of Auctioneer. In the 1901 St Helier Census, Philippe`s occupation was given as "Retired Auctioneer". He had also returned from No. 11 to living at No. 9, Library Place. The family clearly owned both
  6. The wedding was witnessed by Philip John Ouless, the celebrated Jersey artist, who was the bridegroom`s cousin
  7. Philip John was a Clerk in 1881, perhaps working in his father`s business
  8. Sailor, in 1881: St Helier Census. By the time of his marriage, he had set up his own business as a Tobacconist. Charles took over auctioneer and estate agent business at 9 Library Place on the death of his father but then sold it<
  9. Salesman, on marriage, in 1902. He was living at the family home in Library Place until at least 1911
  10. Carpenter
  11. Nurse
  12.  ?OV, entering College in January 1853: "---, son of Ph. de Ste Croix, 9 Library Place." Charles was a Wine Merchant; living at home, being 9, Library Place, St Helier, with his father, in 1871 and 1881. His Will was dated and proved in 1881. Charles had evidently become a man of property as, by 1881, he owned houses at 10, Library Place, 1, Brook Street and 13, Vine Street. He left life enjoyment to his married domestic, Elizabeth Baker, wife of Joseph Finsfeldt, with remainder to his niece, Lilian Rolls, daughter of Charles Edward [Rolls] and wife of Nathaniel Pratt. She also received a portrait, painted by Mons. Beaumont, of his late father, Philippe de Ste Croix. The testator`s nephew, Charles de Ste Croix, fils Philippe, received the watch "left me by my late father." There were moneys and then minor legacies. Lastly, another portrait of the testaor`s father, Philippe de Ste Croix, this time by Walter Ouless [their cousin] was left also to Elizabeth Baker. One is left with the impression that, other than for his niece Lilian Rolls, Charles was not close to his brother`s family: D/Y/A/42/1, at the Jersey Archive. He was a Lieutenant, RJM
  13. Cabinet Maker; living with the family at Library Place, 1841-1881: St Helier Censuses. He was almost certainly a part of the business, engaged in furniture making
