Origin of surname
From ancient French, this is a name indicating the inhabitant of a small hamlet or commune, or the land surrounding it. The name is well known in Normandy to this day.
The earliest Jersey record is that of the marriage of Robert du Fresne and Anne Mauger in St Brelade on 17 January 1601. They had a daughter Catherine. However, there is a record of a spelling variant, de Freisnes as early as 1214.
Daniel du Fresne, who is at the head of the tree below, married Jeanne Noeul at St Martin in 1617. It appears that he had a daughter Jeanne, perhaps by an earlier wife, baptised in 1610.
- du Fresne
- de Freisnes
