Origins of surname

The variation Dumont give the clue to the derivation of this name. Translated from French it signifies 'of the hill', and means somebody whose house was on a hill.

Early records

The name has been present in Jersey since early in the second half of the 19th century. The early Dumond children born in the island were not baptised in a Church of England church, so they do not appear in our database. They may have been baptised as Roman Catholics.
