Private Perchard was born in St Martin in January 1884, the son of Philip and Eliza Mary Mc Donald.

When the First World War broke out he was living with his parents, two elder brothers, two younger brothers and two sisters, and working as a plasterer.

Like most young men of his age he was serving in the Royal Militia Island of Jersey, as a member of the 2nd (East) Battalion.

Following the suspension of the Militia in 1917 he transferred to the Royal Jersey Garrison Battalion, and then to the Dorsetshire Regiment.

Finally he transferred to the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He did so along with another 32 Jerseymen who were part of a batch of 55 from the island who had joined the Dorsets. It is likely that when they arrived in France the group of 32 were transferred to replace casualties in the Rifle Corps]]
