Origins of surname

This name was imported by Crusaders. It comes from the Greek Elias, and that in turn from the Hebrew Eliyahu, meaning Jehovah is God.

Early records

The name first appeared in the St Brelade baptism register in 1802, for the baptism of John, the first child of Jeremiah Ellis and Sara.
