Origins of surname

This name is derived from the personal name Elouard, which in turn comes from the Germanic Aliward, ali meaning other and ward meaning look after.

Early records

The family, which arrived in Jersey in the early 20th century, originated in the Cotes d'Armor department of north Brittany. Francois Jean-Marie Eloury and his wife Marie Perrine Riou arrived, probably with six of their seven children, the last being born in the island.
