Origins of surname

This name is of Gaelic origin, and was found in both Ireland and Scotland. It is derived from Fearghus, via Fergus, made up of "fear" = man, and "gus" = force. This was the name of an early Irish mythological figure, a valiant warrior, and was also the grandfather of St Columba. Ferguson is by far the most popular and widespread form of Fergus.
