Origins of surname

The name was probably first given to a fisherman. Other suggestions seem like an attempt to get away from the obvious derivation.

Early records

This surname first appeared in Jersey church records in 1727 with the marriage of Eduard Fisher and Mary Hodges in St Lawrence. There is no record of their having children baptised in the island, nor is there of three Richard Fishers who married between 1807 and 1817. The first baptism record is that of Charles Eustace Frederick Fisher, son of John and Elizabeth Wilkinson, in 1822.
