From Latin fons or possibly from old baptismal names fontanus or fondanus

As can be seen in the variants below, the name has been recorded in one form or another in Jersey since the late 12th century

The family owned the fief ès Hormans in St Peter.

In the Assize Roll of 1309 Philippe Fondent was recorded as a Jurat of the Royal Court. Thomas Fondant was also a Jurat in 1331 and Guillaume Fondan was Rector of St Brelade (1497-1499).
