Origins of surname
This is one of many French surnames which have developed from Gauthier, with different spellings in different regions. It has its roots in the Germanic Waldhari (wald = ruler, hari = army).
The name makes its first appearance in Jersey in the St Lawrence birth register in the 1870s. The family can be traced back to the Brittany town, Quintin. There are still at least two Gautron households in Jersey today.
- Gautier, a separate family in Jersey
There are many more variations which are found throughout France, but did not find their way to Jersey.
