Origins of surname
This surname is probably a variant of Geoffroy, which has Germanic origins, meaning 'god of peace'.
This name first appeared in Jersey records in 1664 with the marriage of Gaspard Geffrard, a 'stranger' to Elizabeth Dune in St Helier. The couple had seven children baptised in the parish. Geffrard was a relatively common name in the island, but appears to have died out in 1840 with the death of Jean, last of the male line, at the age of 69. There had been no baptisms after 1776.
