Origins of surname

This name means 'son of Gib', which was a diminuitive of Gilbert. It is found mostly in the North of England and Scotland. The ultimate derivation is from Gisil = 'hostage', and behrt = 'bright or famous'.

Early records

The name first appeared in Jersey records in 1716 when Jane, daughter of Robert Gibson, was baptised in St Lawrence. There was then a 63-year gap until the baptism of Hugh Francois, the first of three children of Joseph Gibson and Amelia Griffiths, in St Helier
