Origins of surname
This surname, almost certainly French in origin, is derived from the German Wigmar: wig = 'battle', mar = 'famous'.
The name was only present in Jersey from around 1620 until 1750, although there have been isolated records in spelling variants.
Although we have no reason to believe that this is an indigenous Jersey name, the 23 baptism records in the island are more than double the total number of French records in the Geneanet database. There are no records in any spelling variation on Ancestry.
The name is found in Spain as both a personal and family name.
