Origins of surname

There are places in Dorset, Norfolk and Kent with this name, which gave rise to the surname. It is derived from gythlingaham, meaning the homestead of the people of Gythla.

Early records

A son and daughter of Joseph Gillingham and Jeanne Le Peltier were baptised in St Helier in the 1680s, then nothing more was seen of the name until 1831. It was not before 1850 that the first family really became established.
