Origin of surname

This started out as a medieval French personal name, a diminuitive of 'Giard'. The name is known in Normandy today

Early records

The family was established in Jersey as early as the 14th century, and various spellings have been found in early records. However, it is likely that the name died out in Jersey in the 16th century with the death in his first year of Jean, son of Robert, in 1576, and reappeared with immigrant from France Isaac Giot in the 18th century
