Origins of surname
We have no information on the derivation of this name, which we believe originated in Brittany. However, it is possible that it is a diminuitive of Gouyer, a Normandy surname, which is a variant of Gouhier, and in turn, Goudier, derived from the Germanic Godeharius, meaning 'God's army'.
The name appears to have arrived in Jersey in about the middle of the 19th century.
