Great War Roll of Honour

W17WW1ROH01.jpg

After the end of the First World War the States of Jersey created a list of all those islanders who lost their lives during the conflict, and in 1919 they published an official Roll of Honour. This page contains links to that Roll of Honour, which remains the only official list of war casualties. An extended online list has been produced in recent years, containing significantly more names than the original, because the qualifications for inclusion have been extended. The digital Roll of Honour includes many whose connections with the island are somewhat tenuous - those who were educated, often for short periods, at Victoria College; those who married Jersey women but never lived in, or even visited, the island; Frenchmen who were working in Jersey when the war started - and others whose deaths after 1919 were attributed to war wounds; who died of natural causes while serving in the Royal Militia Island of Jersey or Royal Jersey Garrison Battalion; and others who died of natural causes or as a result of an accident while training with their units and never reached the war zone. Most of these are included in our own lists of war casualties on our Family pages, so we make no comment on the rights and wrongs of widening the qualifications for inclusion in the new, unofficial Roll of Honour. We merely wish to make clear that this page contains what was, and remains, the only official Roll of Honour
