Guernsey People

James Marr's book Guernsey People (published in 1984 by Phillimore) was intended as the sequel to his History of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The fly cover promotes it as the first Biographical Dictionary of the Bailiwick to have been attempted, and includes short biographies of a large number of people who have made an impact on the island. This means that not all of those profiled were born in the island, so, for example, Victor Hugo is among those included. It also includes the biographies of Guernseymen who achieved greatness outside the islands, such as Thomas De La Rue and Brigadier Herbert Le Patourel.

In addition to containing biographies of all of the individuals below, there are a number of Appendices, containing:

  • World War II
    • Jewish Victims of the German Occuption
    • Underground Resistance Heroes
  • Anecdotal Jottings - shorter biographies
  • Family Trees - of some of the old Guernsey families
  • Early Bailiwick Names by Dr SK Kellett-Smith

A follow-up, More Guernsey People was published by the Guernsey Society in 1992.
