This family name is a corruption of a Norman personal name, Gumbald - a compound of the Germanic elements qund = 'battle' and bald = 'bold' or 'brave'. '

The name did not appear in Jersey until the children of James and Ann Picot were baptised in St Brelade from 1808 onwards.
