Origins of surname

This surname developed from the Medieval forename Hain, in turn from the Norse Hayne

Early records

The name first appeared in Jersey records in 1833, when there were baptisms for two separate families in St Saviour, followed by another in St Helier two years later. All these children were daughters and it was some time later before a family with male descendants became established.
