Origins of surname

There are various suggestions for the origins of this name. The favourite seems to be that it started as a short form of Robert before becoming a surname. Alternatively it is believed to come from a Saxon term for Celtic high priests, who were believed to have been born into witchcraft. Finally is is believed to be derived from the French term for someone hunting with a falcon instaead of a hawk.

Early records

Two families became established in Jersey in the second half of the 19th century, one apparently originating in France and one in Norfolk
